Lot description Show orginal version
Grade: VF
Reference: Grandowski 58.5D.01.01 (R8), Kopicki 5342 (R8)

Extremely rare denomination in Silesian minting.

The rarest five-ducatta from the reign of the Three Brothers.

Listed for the first time at auction in Poland. At foreign auctions known to us only from this piece!

Impressive in size and presentation numismat stamped with semi-talar. Five-ducats were minted in only three vintages (1656-1659) during the co-presidency of the three brothers, and catalog makers unanimously describe them all as great rarities. This vintage, 1658, according to an expert in this minting, Marcin Grandowski, is the rarest of them (only 13% of the population of five-ducats, counting with the piece from the National Museum in Warsaw).

A very nicely presented coin. Removed 12 o'clock pendant, good detail, surface luster.

Probably the only five-ducatta 1658 available on the antiquarian market. Obverse and reverse struck with exactly the same stamps as the coin from the National Museum in Warsaw, illustrated in M. Grandowski on page 690.

Highly recommended, as a second buying opportunity may not arise for years.

Ex. Dr. Busso Peus (387/3016 in 2006, described as vorzüglich, sold at the time at more than double the asking price).

Gold, diameter 36.5 mm, weight 16.86 g.
